Vegan London Fog

Title: Vegan London fog

There is something so comforting about sitting down and drinking a warm London Fog on a cold day.  Whether it’s in a bustling coffee shop, or at home, snuggled in a blanket by the window, London Fogs are the perfect cozy winter beverage.  Unfortunately because of the pandemic, sitting in a busy coffee shop is not ideal right now, so I created a recipe that you can whip up at home.

This recipe turned out perfectly.  It has just the right amount of sweetness between the sugar and vanilla extract, and has that citrusy fragrance that comes from Earl Grey tea.  The recipe is simple; however, it is important to note that I used an electric milk frother to get the oat milk frothy.  There are a few different types of milk frothers you can use, or if you don't have a milk frother, you can try one of these methods.

When I was a barista, I learned which plant milks foam the best.  I found that soy milk always made better lattes than almond or coconut milk.  I think it is because soy milk is a bit thicker than the other two.  Oat milk wasn’t super popular at that time, so I didn’t get to use that.  However, later on when I was given a milk frother and started making lattes again, I learned that oat milk is also an excellent option for making lattes.  You can use whichever plant milk you prefer, but I find oat and soy easier to work with.

Making the London Fog is super easy.  Just steep a small amount of tea, adding in the sugar and vanilla while it’s steeping.  This is the brand I used:

Stash tea bag, Double Bergamot Earl Grey

While the tea, vanilla, and sugar are steeping together, froth your milk.  (This step will look different depending on which method you choose)

Pouring oat milk from a frother into a cup to make a London Fog

Once the milk is frothy, pour it into the cup with your tea.  And that’s it!  A creamy, fragrant London Fog that you can enjoy at home.

This recipe will make approximately 10 ounces, or a medium-sized mug

Ingredients

1 inch, approximately, of Earl Grey tea (one tea bag or loose leaf tea)

½ tsp cane sugar (or sweetener of choice)

¼ tsp vanilla extract

1 cup oat milk (oat and soy foam the best, but you can use your favourite plant milk)

The Process

  1. Steep the small amount of tea in a mug according to the directions on the package.  Add the sugar and vanilla to the tea and stir it

  2. Froth the oat milk in a frother (or without a frother)

  3. Pour the frothy milk into the mug and enjoy!
